
Walk into most modern wellness studios and you'll be offered heat in at least three different forms: an infrared sauna, a traditional dry sauna, and something steam-based. They all make you sweat. They all feel restorative. But they work through genuinely different physics, they feel different on your skin, and — importantly — they are not backed by the same depth of research.

If you want the gentlest entry point and the ability to sit comfortably for 30 to 45 minutes, choose an infrared sauna. If you want the most intense, most traditional heat experience with the largest body of long-term research behind it, choose a traditional dry sauna. If you want warmth that feels soothing on the airways and skin without high air temperature, choose steam.
None of the three is universally "best." The right choice depends on how much heat you tolerate, how long you want to stay in, and what you're trying to get out of the session.
A traditional sauna heats a room full of air — usually with a stove and a bed of rocks — to a high temperature with very low humidity. Typical operating conditions land somewhere around 150–195°F (roughly 65–90°C) with humidity in the 10–20% range. Pouring water over the rocks creates a short humidity spike, called löyly, that briefly makes the room feel dramatically hotter.
Because the air itself is doing the work, the heat hits your skin surface first. Sweat evaporates quickly in the dry air, which is exactly why most people find 10 to 20 minutes to be a full session. It is the most intense of the three by a wide margin.
An infrared sauna takes a different approach. Instead of superheating the air, infrared emitters produce radiant energy that your body absorbs directly — much the way you feel warmth standing in sunlight on a cool day. The air in the cabin stays comparatively mild, generally in the 110–150°F (about 43–65°C) range, with low humidity.
The practical consequence is comfort and duration. Because you aren't fighting scorching air, most people can sit for 30 to 45 minutes and still work up a substantial sweat. That makes infrared the most approachable option for anyone new to heat therapy, anyone who has struggled with the claustrophobic intensity of a hot dry sauna, or anyone who wants to read, breathe, and decompress rather than endure. Steam rooms and steam pods run cooler than either sauna — usually somewhere around 110–120°F (about 43–49°C) — but at close to 100% relative humidity. That saturated air is why steam feels so much hotter than the thermometer suggests: your sweat has nowhere to evaporate to, so your body's primary cooling mechanism is largely blocked.
Steam is the option people reach for when they want warmth that feels gentle on the throat and sinuses and hydrating on the skin, rather than the dry, searing quality of a hot sauna. This is where an honest guide has to slow down. Heat therapy is genuinely interesting, and it is also an area where marketing tends to run well ahead of the evidence. Here's a fair reading.
The most cited work comes from Finland, where sauna use is a lifelong cultural habit and therefore easier to study over decades. In a prospective cohort study of 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015, researchers followed participants for a median of 20.7 years. Compared with men who had one sauna session per week, the adjusted hazard ratio for sudden cardiac death was 0.78 (95% CI, 0.57–1.07) for those with two to three sessions per week and 0.37 (95% CI, 0.18–0.75) for those with four to seven sessions per week. Longer sessions showed a similar pattern: compared with sessions under 11 minutes, sessions longer than 19 minutes carried an adjusted hazard ratio for sudden cardiac death of 0.48 (95% CI, 0.31–0.75).
Those are striking numbers, and they deserve one important caveat: this was an observational cohort, not a randomized trial. It can show association, not causation. People who sauna four to seven times a week may differ from people who sauna once a week in ways the adjustments couldn't fully capture. The authors themselves concluded that further studies are warranted to establish the mechanism.
Infrared heating has been studied clinically — most notably in Japan, where a standardized far-infrared protocol known as Waon therapy has been investigated in cardiovascular patient populations. The trials are generally small, and the total volume of published research on infrared is considerably thinner than the traditional sauna literature.
What can reasonably be said is that infrared reliably produces the core physiological signature of passive heating — elevated skin and core temperature, increased heart rate, peripheral vasodilation, and sweating — at a lower and more tolerable air temperature. Whether that translates into the same long-term outcomes reported in the Finnish cohorts has not been established.
Steam's evidence base is the thinnest of the three. A frequently referenced Cochrane review examined heated, humidified air for the common cold and found the results inconsistent — some trials reported symptom relief and others did not, with the overall quality of evidence rated low and the reviewers concluding that steam inhalation is not recommended as a routine treatment for cold symptoms pending better trials. Minor adverse effects such as nasal irritation and lightheadedness were reported.
None of that makes steam useless. It makes steam a comfort and relaxation modality with modest clinical support, which is a perfectly reasonable thing for it to be.
When you move from observational cohorts to controlled trials, the picture gets more measured. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials examined non-acute effects of passive heating interventions — hot water immersion, saunas, hot yoga, and local heating — across twenty RCTs lasting two to fifteen weeks. It found no statistically significant pooled effects for most outcomes, including flow-mediated dilation, pulse wave velocity, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, fasting glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol fractions, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein. The pooled estimate for systolic blood pressure (–2.46 mmHg; 95% CI, –5.02 to 0.10) did not reach statistical significance, though the reviewers noted a potential reduction with systemic heating and among adults with underlying cardiovascular risk. Heterogeneity between studies was substantial.
Read that carefully and the takeaway is not "heat therapy doesn't work." It's that the controlled evidence is still developing, the effect sizes in short trials are modest, and anyone promising you specific clinical outcomes from a sauna session is getting ahead of what the literature currently supports. We'd rather tell you that plainly than sell you a number we can't stand behind.
Yes — and many people find that a combination is more satisfying than committing to a single modality. Pairing heat with cold is the most common approach: a heat block followed by a cold plunge, repeated in cycles, is what's generally meant by contrast therapy. There's no single prescription, and any studio that gives you one without knowing anything about you is guessing. That said, a few practical principles hold up well:
Heat is a real physiological stressor, and it isn't appropriate for everyone. A widely cited review in The American Journal of Medicine notes that sauna bathing is well tolerated by most healthy adults and children, and identifies unstable angina pectoris, recent myocardial infarction, and severe aortic stenosis as contraindications. The same review notes that sauna bathing is safe during the uncomplicated pregnancies of healthy women — but pregnancy is exactly the situation where an individual conversation with your own obstetric provider matters more than a general statement in an article.
A few additional practical points: alcohol and heat exposure are a genuinely poor combination and should not be mixed. Certain medications — including those affecting blood pressure, fluid balance, or sweating — can change how your body handles heat. And if you have any cardiovascular condition, are managing a chronic illness, or simply aren't sure, the right move is to ask your physician before you start rather than after.

Neither is objectively better. Infrared is more comfortable and allows longer sessions at lower air temperatures; traditional dry saunas deliver higher intensity and have a substantially larger body of long-term observational research behind them. The better question is which one you'll realistically use consistently.
You will typically feel wetter in a steam room, but much of that is condensed water vapor on your skin rather than sweat you produced. Because steam blocks evaporative cooling, your body's actual sweat output in a saturated environment is harder to gauge by feel alone.

Your liver and kidneys handle detoxification. Sweat is primarily a thermoregulatory fluid, and the quantities of anything meaningful excreted through it are small. Heat therapy has plenty of appeal without leaning on that particular claim, so we don't make it.
Many people do, and the Finnish cohort data described participants using saunas up to four to seven times per week. Whether daily use is appropriate for you specifically depends on your health status, hydration, medications, and how you feel after sessions. Build up gradually rather than starting at daily.
